A quick post. I’ve decided to mod my computer keyboard to help me at school. I think it is important to assess ones tools and spaces to ensure the mass produced goods that currently surround most of us have been optimized for our context. My assessment turned up a necessity for a new affordance on my computer.
As a test I used pieces of tape to add a textural affordance to help me identify the keys for the different arrow tools in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. I figured if the little nubs on the “F” & “J” keys help me maintain proper typing position, these textural references may, in time, help me navigate the two tools I use the most in the two programs I use the most. Maybe, if it works, I’ll scratch a small more permanent texture onto the keys…no need to rush in to permanent defacement yet though!
