Today was the first day of class. It was mostly just setting ground rules and trying to help everyone get acclimated. We got a list of possible assistantships and projects we will be able to work on this year. Some of those were more interesting than others, but that’s to be expected.
We also talked about some authors and books that touch on similar concepts to what the program is build on. The one that stuck out the most was Ken Robinson, who wrote The Element. We watched a video of him and he was surprisingly funny. I was seriously caught off guard by the digression into comedy he would make, often. His book is focused on finding the work you were meant to do, where you are in your element, so to speak.
The other book we were told about were Thoughtless Acts written by Jane Fulton Suri from IDEO. It discusses the little things we may do everyday and not notice but show how we interact and react to our world. IDEO is a pretty cool company that implements a design strategy similar to what UArts professes. One that focuses on the design process and research and not necessarily on just creating a nice looking object, thought they do that as well.
Design Philly was also brought up once or twice today. I don’t know too much about it, but it seems like a week long design smorgasbord. The link will probably provide a bit more info than I have or feel like liaising right now. As I learn more I’ll post it though.
Overall it seems like a pretty great program and I’m really excited to be here. I think it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
